Neurotoxins – Botox & Dysport
While spending years laughing and smiling is something to be proud of, there is nothing exciting about the lines and wrinkles those facial expressions leave behind. Botox is an injectable that is used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in areas like frown lines and crow’s feet and it is one of the biggest names in the anti-aging cosmetic industry.

Botox (Allergan) and Dysport (Medicis) are injectable neuromodulators, meaning they can temporarily alter the nerve impulses of targeted muscles, therefore reducing or eliminating contraction-induced wrinkles.
Each brand has a slightly different formulation of the same substance, bacterium Clostridium Botulinum, or Botulinum Toxin A, but they all work the same way: they block the nerve impulses of the injected muscles to temporarily paralyze muscle movements that cause wrinkles. The most common targets are horizontal lines across the forehead and perpendicular frown lines between the brows (also called “The Elevens”), but many also rely on Botox and Dysport for crow’s feet, nasal squint lines, lines around the neck, eyebrow lifting, and even profuse underarm sweating and migraines.
During a Botox or Dysport procedure, your physician will insert a tiny needle into the targeted area, injecting the appropriate chosen neuromodulator for a few seconds at a time into each muscle. While most patients report little to no pain during treatment, a topical anesthetic can be applied beforehand if necessary. The nerve signals are blocked, relaxing the muscle which makes the wrinkle. The majority of wrinkles are softened, leaving you with smooth skin and a big smile!
Botox & Dysport are FDA-approved for treatment in the glabella or “11’s” in between your eyebrows. Physicians can inject most facial lines above the tip of the nose. They are also also approved to treat excessive sweating in the armpits, palms, and soles of the feet, and can help alleviate the symptoms of incontinence and migraines.

Results are typically seen between seven to ten days, with full results in two to three weeks after treatment. Over time, you may require less treatments as the muscles contract less frequently and the injections prevent new wrinkles from forming. For the most part, results last around four to six months. Patients that are highly sensitive may experience some slight swelling at the injection site, but this typically resolves itself within a day or two.
