A Photofacial is a procedure where intense pulses of light penetrate the skin, causing blood vessels and collagen below the epidermis to constrict. When the blood vessels and collagen constrict, age lines and redness are drastically reduced. The collagen protein then fills in the wrinkles, leaving you with smooth and supple skin. Depending on the size of the area being treated, treatment time may take anywhere from a couple of minutes to up to an hour.
IPL Photofacials are typically performed on the face, neck, dédecolletage or hands. Ideal candidates are individuals with blotchy, sun-damaged skin. Patients with large pores, freckles, spider veins, melasma, and wrinkles can also benefit from this procedure.
There are many benefits to an IPL Photofacial procedure. The treatment is virtually painless and requires little to no downtime. Unlike many skin resurfacing laser treatments, the IPL Photofacial is non-ablative, which means no skin is removed. This makes the recovery time short and the risks associated with the Photofacial very low.
Typically, 2-4 treatments spaced 3-4 weeks apart are necessary for optimal results. There is no immediate downtime after the treatment, but patients should expect their skin to be red for a few hours. It is important to avoid direct sunlight exposure for several days, and wear lots of sunscreen for at least two weeks following the treatment. IPL Therapy results may last up to a year or longer, provided you follow a healthy skincare routine.
