In a previous post, we explored the topic of appetite-suppressing foods. For many people, the idea that they can actually eat their way to a healthier, happier body is one that comes as a surprise. Too often when we think of weight loss, we assume that food is the enemy, and the more we can deprive ourselves of eating, the faster we’ll achieve our weight loss goals. However, this is far from the truth, as we discovered that there are foods that can work to keep us feeling fuller longer, thus reducing the urge to eat unnecessary calories throughout the day.
Today we’re going to continue busting weight loss myths by talking about the role that hormone imbalances play in the gain or loss of body fat. If you’d like help getting your hormones under control so that you can finally shed weight and feel healthy again, please don’t hesitate to contact Revita Life MD in Louisville. We’ve helped hundreds of men and women understand the vital link between hormone replacement therapy and weight loss, and we can do the same for you.
It’s Not Hunger, It’s Your Hormones
You know that feeling that strikes at around 11 am and then again right when you get home from work in the afternoon? That feeling that you could literally eat anything that you can get your hands on? It’s not merely the fact that the level of food in your stomach dropped below acceptable levels. What you’re actually feeling is the presence of certain hormones in your body that regulate hunger: ghrelin and leptin.
“Leptin is a hormone, made by fat cells, that decreases your appetite. Ghrelin is a hormone that increases appetite, and also plays a role in body weight. Levels of leptin — the appetite suppressor — are lower when you’re thin and higher when you’re fat. But many obese people have built up a resistance to the appetite-suppressing effects of leptin, obesity expert Mary Dallman, PhD, from University of California at San Francisco, told WebMD.
What Is Weight Loss Resistance?
The hormones leptin and ghrelin are supposed to help your body remain at its ideal weight (keep in mind that this may not be YOUR ideal weight). However, they can fall out of balance, causing a lot of problems for people who would like to achieve more aggressive weight loss goals. This is a phenomenon that hormone replacement therapy experts refer to as weight loss resistance.
“Weight loss resistance occurs when a woman has a physiologic/metabolic imbalance that makes losing weight and keeping it off extremely challenging, even when she puts forth her best efforts,” explains Marcelle Pick, OB/GYN, on WomenToWomen.com. “It may be a preexisting condition or a new development, but until it’s addressed, no amount of working out at the gym will fix it.”
